This introductory printmaking unit began with students learning about the techniques and themes of several noteworthy printmaker artists such as Andy Warhol, Katsushika Hokusai and Tom Killion.   To start the studio project, each student chose a favorite Facebook profile photo and manipulated the photo in GIMP.  They traced the edited photo onto linocut and carved the image of their portrait, adding a pattern of their choice in the background.  Students printed their linocut portrait 3-4 times on paper in the layout of their choice.  The linocut prints captured each student’s personality by facial expression, background pattern and color.

We then decided to create a collaborative print with the school acronym, “KAS” in the background.  This large scale print now hangs in the school’s main office and displays the array of unique personalities in our student body.
