“The extraordinary in the ordinary” Scratchboard project

This unit of study began with an introduction to compositional design in photography.  With the compositional guidelines in mind, students explored the school campus behind the lens, photographing both manmade and natural subject matter.  Each student selected a favorite photo from their batch and created a detailed scratchboard carving based on the photo, revisiting shading techniques of hatching and cross-hatching as well as paying attention to positive and negative space.  The result was a stunning mosaic of all the scratchboard carvings in the main hallway of school.
